From October 2012 the UK Government aim to introduce the UK Green Deal Scheme. The Green Deal Scheme aims to make it possible for millions of homes and businesses to have energy efficient improvements at NO UP FRONT COST to them. The Green Deal Scheme is to enable energy efficiency products to be installed and paid for via your energy bill over a period of time rather than upfront today. The DECC (Department of Energy and Climate Change) has taken an integrated approach to the design of the Green Deal, so that the scheme is broadly the same for both the domestic and non-domestic sectors. However, there are a few areas where they have varied their approach to reflect the particular characteristics of the non-domestic sector and these are set out below. Non-domestic customers will be attracted by the prospect of no upfront cost for

The Building Research Establishment (BRE) states that 60% of the buildings that will be standing in 2050 are already built and that 40% of them predate 1985 (the year that Building Regulations relating to fuel and power were first introduced under Part L). So if the UK is to come anywhere near meeting the Government’s target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 34% by 2020 and 80% by 2050, it is vital that we look at simple energy-efficiency improvements to our existing building services. About a third of the UK’s total energy consumption is used for heating or producing hot water, claims the Carbon Trust, so it makes sense for building-services engineers to pay attention to commercial boiler plant when advising clients on their carbon-reduction strategies. Reductions in energy consumption for heating of 10% or more are easily achievable through maintenance and low-cost improvements. So how do we achieve that.
