Acorn is committed to the UK’s mission reaching net zero by 2050. It is crucial to drive meaningful carbon emission reductions to make an environmental impact. We’re proud to be supported by the Planet Mark Business Certification, which strengthens our sustainability efforts while contributing to help us achieve long-term success and recognition. Sustainability is embedded in our daily operations, and we continually share our progress and performance with stakeholders.
The Global Challenge: Why Net Zero Matters?
It’s Net Zero week (7th July – 11th July 2025) and the question is what is net-zero and how can we tackle this challenge.
Net Zero links to greenhouse gas contributions into the atmosphere, the goal is to achieve a balance. If these targets are not reached, this could increase global warming exceeding up to 2°C leading to severe weather conditions, rising sea levels and a collapse in the eco-system.
Carbon emissions
Did you know, the primary greenhouse gas contributing to global warming is Carbon dioxide. The main factors include burning fossil fuels for transportation, electricity, heat, and energy production. Global temperatures can also increase resulting in damage to infrastructure, natural disasters, food shortages and a decline in species leading to extinction.
Reducing carbon footprint
There are plenty of ways to lower your carbon footprint to support the environment. Firstly, by reducing your energy use and making switches to renewable energy sources such as switching your suppliers to green energy providers or even installing solar panels if necessary. Also by engaging in recycling, reducing waste, and reusing existing products. Implementing changes in facilities management methods can contribute to more efficient, sustainable, and cost-effective operations.
Engineering a Sustainable Future in Facilities Management
The journey to net zero requires a collaborative effort across industries and engineering appropriate strategies. At Acorn, sustainability is a responsibility we take seriously. That’s why we’re proud with the renewal of Planet Mark and ISO 14001. It is our going journey to reduce our environmental impact and contribute to a more sustainable future.
Planet Mark Certification
Renewing our Planet Mark certification reflects our continued efforts to measure and reduce our carbon footprint. Planet Mark’s Net Zero Programme supports businesses on their journey to net zero by helping them measure emissions, set meaningful targets, and develop effective transition plans.
ISO 14001 Certification
Our ISO 14001 renewal highlights Acorn’s structured approach to environmental management. This internationally recognised standard ensures we’re continually assessing and improving the way we operate to minimise our environmental impact and promote long-term ecological responsibility.
These certifications wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and hard work of our teams, who remain committed to creating positive change in our day-to-day operations.
Sustainable Engineers
The responsibilities which engineers should implement to achieve the best solutions within their work practices. Whilst also minimising environmental concerns:
Sustainable materials: Using recycled materials supporting eco-friendly methods within engineering and construction projects.
Waste Management: Creating specialist waste management systems reducing and recycling and appropriately disposing of waste within industrial processes.
To achieve net-zero this means that changes in energy systems and infrastructure must be considered. Energy saving solutions and energy efficiency improvements can be introduced by allowing opportunities for cost savings. Engineers can contribute by using advanced technology such as smart HVAC systems and use LED lighting.
The Benefits of Sustainability Practices
Within the FM Industry sustainability is key to achieving positive impacts. For example, energy efficiency is improved by optimising new technology and systems contributing to a reduction in energy bills, leading to money saving opportunities. Acorn’s overall brand reputation and image will also reflect positively and encourage new businesses who look for sustainable solutions in FM companies to support their sustainable goals. Additionally, employee satisfaction and engagement will increase as a healthy work environment physically such as air quality, lighting and temperature supports improved productivity. By Implementing and following these sustainable ESG responsibilities within Acorn overall promoting important ethical standards and contributing to a more sustainable future.
To address the social and economic implications including the goal of achieving net-zero.
Listed below are some sustainable objectives:
- Introducing affordable and reliable energy saving solutions
- Responsible consumption and production of sustainable materials
- Waste reduction and recycling methods
- Integrating regulatory and environmental standards into routine business operations.
